Isabel’s Path to a Brighter Tomorrow

Published May 1, 2025

In the vibrant yet turbulent streets of Havana, Cuba, under the shadow of Fidel Castro’s regime, Mrs. Isabel grew up in a world where opportunities were scarce and dreams often gave way to harsh realities. Born into a family grappling with poverty, her childhood was defined by resilience and determination. Despite the challenges, her parents instilled in her a deep sense of purpose and an unwavering belief in education as the key to a better life.

Determined to rise above her circumstances, Mrs. Isabel pursued her studies at the prestigious University of Havana, where she earned a degree in economics. For 31 years, she dedicated herself to her career as an economist, working tirelessly to bring progress to her community.

In a country where resources were limited and progress often stifled; her work became a beacon of hope. Known not only for her professional expertise but also for her compassion, she helped others navigate the economic hardships of daily life. However, as time passed, political and economic instability began to take its toll. By 2023, after a series of natural and man-made disasters, she found herself at a crossroads.

An opportunity emerged to immigrate to the United States under the Cuban Political Refugee program. It was a chance to escape the struggles of her homeland and build a new future for her family. With her aging mother, Mrs. Ana Maria, and her 23-year-old son, Victor, by her side, she embarked on a journey filled with both uncertainty and hope. Leaving everything behind, they arrived in America with little more than determination and a dream.

The family settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where they faced the daunting challenge of starting over. Now in her 50s, Mrs. Isabel knew the road ahead would be difficult. Her 80-year-old mother required constant care and could no longer contribute to the household. Meanwhile, Victor embraced the challenge, enrolling in online courses at Austin Community College and earning 12 credits in economics while working as a clerical assistant for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His dedication became a pillar of strength for the family.

Still, the difficulties of resettlement were immense. Language barriers made it difficult for Mrs. Isabel to find stable employment. In early 2024, determined to improve her English, she sought help from the local Hispanic community and learned about us. She visited the office to ask for assistance and was welcomed by Andres, Cuban Program Assistant, who helped her enroll in ESL evening classes offered by Trinity Lutheran Church in Camp Hill.

Just as she began to regain her footing with a new job as a janitor at the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Hospital, tragedy struck. She was diagnosed with a medical condition requiring urgent kidney surgery. With only a few months of employment, she did not qualify for long-term disability, and the fear of losing her home grew real.

At this critical moment, she turned once again to us. Through our Emergency Assistance Program, she received a lifeline of $4,800 in emergency housing funds to cover rent during her recovery. This assistance was more than financial support—it was a powerful symbol of hope and a reminder that she was not alone.

Thanks to this support, Mrs. Isabel was able to focus fully on her recovery without the added fear of homelessness. The surgery was successful, and after months of rest and rehabilitation, she returned to work stronger and more determined than ever. The aid she received not only stabilized her family’s immediate circumstances but also renewed their confidence in the future.

Today, her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of community. Her journey from the streets of Havana to the heart of Pennsylvania is one of courage, perseverance, and hope. With the support of our organization, she has rebuilt her life and inspired others to believe in the possibility of a brighter future. Now, Mrs. Isabel and her family are not only surviving—they are thriving.
