On December 14th, the ISC’s Afghan and Ukrainian staff were invited to a wonderful Hanukkah celebration at the Harrisburg Beth El Temple, to promote cultural awareness, community connection, and inclusion among community members from diverse backgrounds. The event also provided an opportunity to share information about the work of the ISC and to raise awareness of the needs of newly arrived refugees and immigrants who require support and guidance as they adjust to life in a new country. Our participation supported the goal of making our community more friendly, welcoming, and safe for all.
The celebration opened with welcoming remarks by Mrs. Renee Jacobson, Committee Chair. She noted the special contribution of volunteers who helped prepare and organize the event. During the celebration, attendees learned the meaning and traditions of Hanukkah, the lighting of the menorah, and the significance of such themes as hope, resilience, and freedom. Participants enjoyed traditional and contemporary music performed by the Six13 group, whose interactive concert engaged participants of all ages in fun activities. In addition, the Harrisburg Jewish Choir performed under the direction of conductor Marina Cherepinsky, and Gesher students also performed as part of the Hanukkah program. The event concluded with closing remarks by Rabbi Ariana Capptauber, followed by the lighting of the menorah. Following their traditions, all attendees recited the blessings in Yiddish. This celebration marked a significant milestone for Harrisburg Beth El Temple, as it was the 100th time the congregation celebrated Hanukkah.
Traditional foods and music created a welcoming atmosphere and encouraged meaningful interaction among attendees.
During the event, we had heart-warming conversations with Rabbi Ariana Capptauber, Choir Director Marina Cherepinsky, and other members of the Jewish community. The celebration provided an opportunity for ISC staff to experience American Jewish cultural traditions while sharing their own stories and traditions. The event strengthened community bonds, reduced social isolation, and fostered mutual respect and understanding among participants of different cultures and faiths. Rabbi Ariana also assured us that if any refugees need assistance, we may refer them to Beth El Temple for support.
