[Appeal for Donations] ISC & Grace United Methodist Church’s Partnership

Event Date: March 23, 2025 at 11:00 am Event Location: 216 State St., Harrisburg, PA 17101

On March 23, 2025, we had the opportunity to visit Grace United Methodist Church to shine a light on the urgent needs of Afghan refugees and invite the congregation to respond with meaningful action. Renowned for its deep-rooted commitment to faith and service, the church welcomed us with open arms, offering a thoughtful space for ISC to share the realities that newly arrived families face and to rally support through donations and volunteerism.

The service began with Pastor Anna Layman Knox, who warmly welcomed our team and acknowledged both the impacts ISC is making and the ongoing challenges confronting the Afghan refugee community. Following her introduction, we shared the heart of our work—our mission, the services we offer, and the stories that inspire our efforts.

We also expressed sincere gratitude for the church’s longstanding support, while underscoring the pressing needs of Afghan families striving to build new lives. We then highlighted key areas where immediate assistance is most needed:

  • Housing Assistance
ISC is seeking donations to help cover two months of rent for families at risk of homelessness. This critical support provides a buffer period, allowing us to help every adult family member secure stable employment and avoid housing instability.

  • Transportation Support
Many newly arrived refugees lack reliable transportation. Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with rides to job interviews, workplaces, and medical appointments—helping families access essential services and opportunities.

  • ESL & Employment Assistance
Support is needed to provide English language learning and job readiness resources. These efforts empower refugees to build long-term stability through meaningful employment and greater independence.

Following our call for support, Pastor Anna Layman Knox expressed heartfelt appreciation and led the congregation in a collective prayer for the well-being of refugee families and all those committed to supporting them.

Nine church members generously volunteered to provide transportation assistance to employment interviews and medical appointments. We welcome you to the team!
